On the occasion of the opening of the Liechtenstein Museum in Vienna, Austria and Liechtenstein released a joint stamp issue to mark the new artistic attraction of Austria's capital. See above a reproduction of the chosen work for the stamp, a painting by Rubens, "Venus in Front of the Mirror", c. 1613/1614. It is displayed in the Liechtenstein Museum in Vienna, formerly the Liechtenstein Garden Palace.

Tôshûsai Sharaku (active 1794-95)

Tōshūsai Sharaku (東洲斎写楽 ?, active 1794 - 1795) is widely considered to be one of the great masters of the woodblock printing in Japan. Little is known of him, besides his ukiyo-e prints; neither his true name nor the dates of his birth or death are known with any certainty. His active career as a woodblock artist seems to have spanned just ten months in the mid-Edo period of Japanese history, from middle 1794 to early 1795.
The majority of these prints were portraits of actors in their kabuki or kyogen roles, and others include images of sumo wrestlers and warriors. portraits featuring close-up images of the heads of kabuki actors printed in lavish color and mica were the most highly esteemed of his works.

Toulouse-Lautrec

Toulouse-Lautrec, Henri de (1864-1901). Many immortal painters lived and worked in Paris during the late 19th century. They included Degas, Cézanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Seurat, Renoir, and Toulouse-Lautrec. Toulouse-Lautrec observed and captured in his art the Parisian nightlife of the period.

Physically unable to participate in most of the activities typically enjoyed by men of his age, Toulouse-Lautrec immersed himself in his art. He became an important Post-Impressionist painter, art nouveau illustrator, and lithographer; and recorded in his works many details of the late-19th-century bohemian lifestyle in Paris.

He excelled at capturing people in their working environment, with the colour and the movement of the gaudy night-life present, but the glamour stripped away. He was masterly at capturing crowd scenes in which the figures are highly individualised. At the time that they were painted, the individual figures in his larger paintings could be identified by silhouette alone, and the names of many of these characters have been recorded. His treatment of his subject matter, whether as portraits, scenes of Parisian night-life, or intimate studies, has been described as both sympathetic and dispassionate.
Toulouse-Lautrec's skilled depiction of people relied on his painterly style which is highly linear and gives great emphasis to contour. He often applied the paint in long, thin brushstrokes which often leave much of the board on which they are painted showing through. Many of his works may best be described as drawings in coloured paint.

Among the well-known works that he painted for the Moulin Rouge and other Parisian nightclubs are depictions of the singer Yvette Guilbert; the dancer Louise Weber, known as the outrageous La Goulue ("The Glutton"), who created the "French Can-Can"; and the much more subtle dancer Jane Avril.

Amadeo Modigliani

Modigliani was born on 12th July 1884 in Leghorn (Livorno, Italy), and grew up in a Jewish ghetto, where he suffered serious illnesses as a boy.He studied art in Florence and in 1906 moved to Paris, where he became acquainted with Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau, and other avant-garde artists living there.In Paris, Modigliani led a reckless, dissipated life that gradually affected on his health.His talents as an artist, however, were never doubted by fellow artists.He was influenced by Fauvism....


Fine examples of Modigliani's figure paintings are a number of his Reclining Nude, of which he has made a large number. They are all elegant, arresting arrangements of curved lines and planes as well as a striking idealization of feminine sexuality. Today his graceful portraits and lush nudes at once evoke his name, but during his brief career few apart from his fellow artists were aware of his gifts.

A wonderful painting of "Lady with Straw Hat". The model was Suzanne Fourment, a younger sister of Rubens' second wife, Helene Fourment. an Antwerp tapestry and silk merchant.The direct glance from under the shadow of the hat, the attention directed to the body, and the ring on the finger, all suggest that the painting is a marriage portrait. (The Straw Hat, was first used in the 18th century. , which is felt. with its curling feathers, is the most prominent feature of the painting, shading the face of the sitter.)
